Vanilla Extract
Tips: Buying vanilla beans to make your own extract can be a bit on the pricey side. But, buying vanilla extract in the supermarket is also not a wallet friendly endeavor. One recommendation is to look for websites where you can buy the vanilla beans in bulk. The quality of the vodka is also not important here so feel free to go for the cheap stuff.
There are different types of vanilla beans typically based on where they are grown. Choose the one you like the best. Madagascar or Madagascar Bourborn vanilla beans are probably the most common.

Use a glass jar with a good seal. You don't want the vodka to evaporate.
Split open the vanilla beans down one side. If the beans are dry or difficult to split you can cut the bean in half with some scissors and then use the scissors to split down the side of each half. Add the beans to the jar and cover with the vodka. Make sure the beans are submerged below the liquid surface. Put the jar in a dark place for at least 2 months. Give the jar a little swirl once in a while. The liquid will turn a lovely amber color. It’s a good idea to label the jar with the date as it is easy to forget. If you use vanilla as often as I do I would recommend keeping a jar in production while you are using one that is done.
If you want to make gifts you can wait until the vanilla is done and then divide it between smaller jars. If you want to make individual gifts with the beans inside the jars you should use two beans per ½ cup of vodka.
